While writing fiction you have two choices; you can either write with your heart or with your head. One of my friends and I had a discussion about this a few months ago. He felt that you need to determine who your audience is, what they like and write with your head. I, on the other hand felt that you need to put in your heart and create something unique and decide who your audience should be, later.
When you write marketing materials or articles, you have to write with your mind, by keeping a target audience and an aim and who you’re writing it for in your mind. As here you need to please an audience to make a sale. But it’s completely different when you write fiction. People who read fiction are looking for something new and unique, something that will entertain them and has been developed without following any rules.
If you write with your mind, you won’t be able to write something unique. Once you put in too many rules and write for an audience it will affect your thinking capacity and will discourage you from creating something unique, new and powerful. This is why you need to let go of everything and write with your heart. When you write with your heart you will create a unique story that will connect with other people. Your audience will enjoy it much better and people will want to read it as there is nothing like it out there, they will want to enter this unique world you have created and find out more about it.
So next time you write some fiction, let go of everything and write it with your heart. Maybe after you finish writing with your heart you can use your head only to make it sound better. This way you will be writing with both your heart and your head.
